Baba Payam Ud Din Reshi, widely known as Baba Reshi, is one of Kashmir’s most revered Sufi saints and a central figure of the Reshi order—an indigenous spiritual tradition rooted in purity, simplicity, and devotion to Allah (SWT). Born into a humble family in the 15th century, Baba Payam Ud Din devoted his entire life to spiritual enlightenment and service to humanity. His journey led him through years of meditation, moral discipline, and deep contemplation of divine truth.
Early in his life, Baba Payam Ud Din renounced worldly attachments and embarked on the path of asceticism. He travelled through the serene landscapes of Kashmir before finally settling in the forests of Gulmarg. There, surrounded by nature’s tranquility, he spent years in solitude, prayer, and fasting. His exceptional humility and spiritual insight drew people from far-off villages who sought blessings, healing, and guidance.
Over time, Baba Payam Ud Din Reshi’s reputation grew, and he became affectionately known as “Baba Reshi.” Despite his spiritual status, he remained grounded, teaching that the path to Allah (SWT) lies in kindness, honesty, selflessness, and remembrance of Him.
Service Before Spirituality
Before choosing the path of renunciation, Baba Payam Ud Din Reshi initially served in the court of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin, also known as Budshah, the beloved king of Kashmir. He held a respectable administrative position because of his honesty, intelligence, and dedication. However, despite worldly honor, wealth, and recognition, his heart remained restless.
He witnessed the luxuries and politics of the royal palace but felt that true peace did not lie in material achievements. This inner conflict became the seed of his future spiritual awakening.

The final resting place of the saint, the Baba Reshi shrine, is located along the picturesque Gulmarg–Tangmarg route and stands as a monumental symbol of Kashmir’s spiritual legacy.
